Choose Your Adventure
Saturday Afternoon  ·  Four Featured Options

After the Bean photos, the afternoon is yours. We suggest three wonderful options — or mix and match!

Option A

⛵ Chicago Architecture Boat Tour

One of the most celebrated experiences in the city. The world-famous Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise takes you along the Chicago River past dozens of iconic skyscrapers with expert docents narrating the story of Chicago's architectural legacy.

Getting there from the Bean: Head west on Randolph Street or follow the signs down to the Chicago Riverwalk along the south bank of the Chicago River. Walk west along the Riverwalk — a beautifully landscaped path lined with restaurants, bars, and river views — approximately 0.6 miles to the tour departure docks near Michigan Avenue Bridge (DuSable Bridge). Tours depart from the Chicago Architecture Center Dock at 111 E. Wacker Drive. Booking in advance is strongly recommended — visit architecture.org.

Option B

🎨 The Art Institute of Chicago

One of the world's premier art museums, the Art Institute of Chicago is literally steps from The Gage and the Bean — its main entrance is just south on Michigan Avenue at Adams Street. The Institute is renowned for its breathtaking collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including masterworks by Monet, Renoir, Seurat, and Picasso. Don't miss Georges Seurat's "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte," one of the most recognizable paintings in American art.

Film buffs will recognize the museum from Ferris Bueller's Day Off — the famous scene where Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane wander through the galleries was filmed right here, including Cameron's mesmerizing close-up study of Seurat's pointillist masterpiece. Keep an eye out for the grand staircase and the Gunsaulus Hall of Medieval and Renaissance arms. Visit artic.edu.

And here's a story worth knowing: Bill Murray has credited a painting in the Art Institute — The Song of the Lark by Jules Breton, depicting a young peasant woman pausing at dawn in a field — with saving his life when he was in a state of deep depression. Murray has said that something about the painting's quiet, hopeful beauty stopped him in his tracks and gave him a reason to keep going. The painting hangs in the museum's collection and is well worth seeking out. It may move you more than you expect.

Directions from the Bean: Walk south through Millennium Park to the museum's Modern Wing entrance (a 2-minute stroll), or continue to the main Michigan Avenue entrance at Adams St.

Option C

🏛️ Obama Presidential Center

The Obama Presidential Center, located in Jackson Park on Chicago's South Side — President Obama's home city — is scheduled to open in June 2026, just weeks before the wedding weekend. This extraordinary museum and community center will celebrate the legacy of the 44th President and First Lady Michelle Obama.

While tickets are not yet available for general admission, we are actively trying to secure a block of tickets for wedding guests for Saturday afternoon, July 25th. Stay tuned — we will send an update as soon as we have more information! Visit obama.org/presidential-center to learn more.

Option D

🌊 The Chicago Riverwalk

One of Chicago's most beloved urban spaces, the Chicago Riverwalk stretches nearly a mile along the main branch of the Chicago River through the heart of downtown, from Lake Shore Drive to Lake Street. It's a beautifully designed waterfront promenade lined with restaurants, bars, kayak rentals, seasonal boat docks, public art, and stunning views of the city's iconic skyline towering above the river on both banks.

Grab a drink or a bite at one of the many open-air spots along the water, rent a kayak and paddle under the bridges, or simply stroll and soak in the architecture from river level — a completely different perspective than you get from the street above. The Riverwalk is free to access, open to the public, and absolutely buzzing with energy on summer afternoons. It connects naturally with the Architecture Boat Tour docks (Option A), so the two pair beautifully together.

Getting there from the Bean: Walk west on Randolph or Washington Street toward the river — about a 5-minute walk — and follow the stairs or ramps down to the Riverwalk level. Or head down from Michigan Avenue at the DuSable Bridge. Free admission; individual venues along the walk have their own pricing.

Other Great Saturday Options: Take a leisurely stroll along the Lakefront Trail — Chicago's 18-mile path hugging Lake Michigan with stunning skyline views. Visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Robie House in Hyde Park, one of the finest examples of Prairie-style architecture in the world (tours available at flwright.org). Or take the elevator up to the Willis Tower Skydeck (formerly Sears Tower) and literally step out over the city on the glass-floored ledge — an unforgettable thrill 1,353 feet above Chicago.
03

This is a wonderful opportunity to meet Breanna and David and celebrate together the evening before the big day. Chicago Classics
Where to Eat
Deep dish pizza & the genuine Chicago hot dog

"You can't visit Chicago without trying a deep dish pizza and a proper Chicago-style hot dog. These are non-negotiable."

🍕 Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Chicago deep dish is unlike any pizza you've had before — a buttery, thick cornmeal crust baked in a deep pan, layered with a generous layer of mozzarella, chunky toppings, and a thick ladle of chunky tomato sauce on top. It's closer to a savory pie than a traditional pizza, and it is glorious. Plan ahead: these pies take 45 minutes to bake.

Lou Malnati's Pizzeria

Multiple Locations  ·  Chicago Institution Since 1971

Perhaps the most beloved deep dish name in Chicago, Lou Malnati's has been serving its legendary butter crust deep dish since 1971. Their signature "Lou," with sausage patty, tomatoes, and mozzarella, is the gold standard. Multiple locations throughout the city and suburbs — the River North location at 439 N. Wells Street is excellent and convenient. Reservations recommended on weekends.

Giordano's

Multiple Locations  ·  Home of Stuffed Deep Dish

Giordano's is famous for its "stuffed" deep dish — an extra layer of dough on top creates an even richer, more indulgent pie than standard deep dish. Founded in 1974, it's one of Chicago's most iconic pizza institutions. The downtown location on Rush Street is popular with visitors. Expect a wait — and worth every minute of it.

Pequod's Pizza

2207 N. Clybourn Avenue, Lincoln Park / Morton Grove

Pequod's is a local legend with a devoted cult following. Their secret weapon: a caramelized crust — the cheese melts over the sides of the pan and bakes into a crispy, lacy, slightly burnt ring around the edge. Incredibly flavorful. The Lincoln Park location is the original and gets packed — arrive early or call ahead. Cash-friendly, neighborhood vibes, no-frills greatness.

Gino's East

162 E. Superior Street, Streeterville  ·  Est. 1966

One of Chicago's oldest and most famous deep dish pizzerias, Gino's East is known for its cornmeal crust and its walls covered floor-to-ceiling with decades of carved and written-on graffiti from visitors around the world. A genuine piece of Chicago history. The Streeterville location near the Magnificent Mile is the classic.

🌭 The Genuine Chicago Hot Dog

A Chicago-style hot dog is a work of art — and there are rules. An all-beef Vienna Beef frankfurter in a poppy seed bun, topped with yellow mustard, neon green relish, diced white onions, two tomato wedges, a dill pickle spear, sport peppers, and a dash of celery salt. Never, ever ketchup. Never.

Portillo's

Multiple Locations  ·  The Chicago Classic

Portillo's is a Chicago institution — the go-to spot for a perfectly dressed Chicago dog, Italian beef sandwiches, and chocolate cake. Always lively, always delicious. The River North location at 100 W. Ontario Street is centrally located and a must-visit for any Chicago trip.

Gene & Jude's Red Hot Stand

2720 River Road, River Grove  ·  Cash Only

Widely considered by Chicago purists to be the finest hot dog in the metro area. Gene & Jude's has been serving dogs from the same counter since 1946. No ketchup. No seats. No frills. Just a perfectly steamed Vienna Beef dog piled high and wrapped in paper. A pilgrimage for true fans — a bit outside the city near O'Hare, but absolutely worth it.

Wieners Circle

2622 N. Clark Street, Lincoln Park

Famous for its char-dogs (grilled rather than steamed) and its legendary late-night atmosphere, the Wieners Circle is a Chicago institution known as much for its salty, playful staff as for its excellent hot dogs. A fun and uniquely Chicago experience, best appreciated on a weekend evening.

Superdawg Drive-In

6363 N. Milwaukee Avenue  ·  Est. 1948

A beloved Chicago landmark since 1948, Superdawg is an old-school drive-in with two giant hot dog mascots on the roof — Maurie and Flaurie — keeping watch over Milwaukee Avenue. Their "Superdawg" comes in its own custom box and is one of the most fun, nostalgic food experiences in the city. A perfect Sunday outing.

Pro tip: Many visitors try to squeeze in both deep dish pizza AND a Chicago dog during their trip. Totally doable — have the hot dog for lunch at a stand and sit down for deep dish at dinner. Your taste buds will thank you.
